PT2006 - Archaeopterix: Archaeopolis

Author File Description
Archaeopterix
File Details
Version: AoM: The Titans
This is my entry in the Pretty Town contest of 2006, which earned me a second place just after The_Vandhaal's astonishing map!

Archaeopolis is the town where I am an absolute dictator. I personally find the cinematic to be very basic, but the map design is great, showing a fantastically designed citadel with an amazing eye for detail.

There's even a small playable part, so enjoy!

Thanks to everyone else who entered, and to the judges, of course.

~~NOTE: PLAYTEST AS PLAYER 6.~~
~~ANOTHER NOTE: THOUGH IT DOESN'T CAUSE LAG ON MY COMPUTER, IT MIGHT ON YOURS.~~

Before I get started, I'd just like to apologize for the delay. I've been busy and have been experiencing some problems with The Titans. Anyways, fantastic map, Archeopterix! It was truly breathtaking and was very unique.

Aesthetics: 5
The overall design of your map was rather amazing. From the beginning to the end, your map was jam packed with interesting objects and they were all placed together very nicely. At a first look, some of your creations in the map looked like they wouldn't work but you created it very well. For example, the first time I watched the scenario the Scylla swimming around in the water kind of bugged me since it was a mythical creature in a pretty realistic town. But, over the many times I watched your cinematic, I fell in love with the Scylla. lol. I don't know, it just hit me and the Scylla seemed to go perfect with the snowy walled-in mood. Can't give you anything less than a five here.

Map Design: 5
The map design was nice as well. In the beginning I really liked that stone brick wall. Of course, like you said in the cinematic, it's nothing compared to the actual city, but it still looked incredible. You had a very good use of terrain and elevation as well. The water was nicely done also and I loved the water splashing up against the great walls of the city. Great job.

Town Appeal: 5
Incredible. Like I said before, the town was breath-taking. I've heard some say that it looks a little repetitive, but I thought it was perfect and every turn revealed something new and unique. The buildings were placed nicely as well. Another thing I really liked was the sauna area(I think that's what it was called). It looked great in the middle of the snowy city and was nicely made. The palace district and the walls were lovely. Great job, I especially like the wall fortress area on the island.

The Tour: 4
The cinematic was beautiful, very nicely done. All of the camera tracks seemed to follow one another perfectly and were timed well. You explained most of the stuff really nicely in the cinematic but there was one thing that suprised me - when the camera revealed a bunch of citizens around a dead body. What was up with that? Other than that the cinematic was great. The walking part was fun and a nice touch as well. Though, a couple of times I got stuck in the busy marketplace and had to use the shifting sands god power to teleport to a less busy area.

Originality: 5
Exremely original. I've never seen such a large city with a great design through the whole city. It was like seeing one of Oscar's buildings covering a huge area. Very nice. The plot was interesting to, you dictator, you.

Additional Comments:
I'm not even going to try and judge to tell you if I think your map deserved first place or not like many people say. It seems like an extremely close one between you and the Vandhaal. And, you can't really compare a city and Underwater ruins. Nonetheless, you did fantastic and definitely deserved to be one of the winners. Great job, and hope to see some more of your work if you're still designing for Age of Mythology. :-)
