Random Event Tutorial 1.2

Author File Description
Dudeminmyth
File Details
Version: AoM: The Titans
A quick guide to help you to create random events for whatever kind of scenario you want. This kind of thing is usually used for escapes, but you can use them for just about anything.

Guide now updated with snapshots of some tricky parts of the setup.

Second update: Minotaur's Labyrinth Escape included in file. Move the scenario to your scenario folder in order to play it. Feel free to look at the triggers.

Hi Dudeminmyth. Here is my review of your guide.

Rating: 2.5
To be honest, while the basic principals of Random Events are contained within your tutorial, the guide as a whole isn't very well constructed. Initially, if you were going to make a text only guide you would have been better off using notepad, as you used no text formats like Bold or Italics.

My first point is that there is not enough information given on each step. You would have been better of giving each step a bold, underlined header and then given a least a paragraph of explanation. I have a very good knowledge of QVs myself but if I didn't, I wouldn't have had a clue what you were talking about. Diagrams or Screenshots would really improve your guide as a whole, as would structuring your triggers better. Using the following format is always a plus too:

TRIGGER 01

[X] Active
[ ] Loop
[X] Run Immediately

Priority = High

Effect:

Timer = 10

Condition:

QV Randomize
Value #1 = 0
Value #2 = 5

You could also give an example, or even include an example scenario in with the guide. That would be great. Using sentences like "make the effect whatever event you want to happen" is very vague, too vague when dealing with QV, which intially are quite complex.

Your grammar is standard but could be improved. You need to keep one point to a sentence, only using commas to expand on that point. Once one point is made, move onto the next sentence.

I also don't see how using Fire Event on the intial QV Randomize trigger would make multiple random events. It would have to wait for the timer to finish first, making it no different from the 'loop' command that's already assigned to it. All you need to do is instead of firing Trigger 1, use another QV randomize within the trigger already being used.

Additional Comments:
This wasn't awful. It does explain basically, with an error, how to create random events but it doesn't allow inexperienced users to understand or learn from it. And that is why the rating is so low. It has the potential to be a good guide, however, a guide on this subject could be atleast 2 pages long if not more. That is what I'd like to see from this.

The updated guide is much more useful. Although there are still improvements and really a guide should not presume adequate knowledge of triggering, it is much clearer and does enable basic users to understand, perhaps without too much trial and error.
