This is an unrated rematch between myself and the second person to ask me my RR. I chose random greek and he chose Kronos. Computer chose Zeus for me. I beat him making only Jason, Odyseus, Toxotes, and centaurs. Really good game. I thought this was about the best I have ever played, at least as far as strategic use of GP, and best I played as zeuse anyway.
First I scouted better than ever before. Then, while I had just reached classical, I realized I had my villagers hunting right in front of his freshly constructed base. My 2 heroes and centaur that were sent there for raiding did a bit of raiding and defended the villagers. Then a lightning bolt to one of his units and I had all my food. Just in time because my defenders were losing hit points and he was starting to raid me at my home base, while I had no military buildings. I cast ceasefire, retreated my villies, built 2 baracks, and an archery range and stable that never got used. I then formed an army of toxotes and defended against his turmas time and time again. I attacked him and destroyed his second town center. With much excess wood I made centaurs and uprgraded them. They killed military and civilian units effectively without getting killed themselves.
He was convinced he was making some kind of mistake to keep getting beaten by this <1500 player. I dunno. I know you cant attack with turmas if your opponent masses toxotes. I know deconstruct works best on a temple during archaic. I know I killed more of his villies than he did mine, and that you are better off guarding villies using murmillio than turma when they are building a TC.
It all makes me wonder though, how do you play as Atty in early game when your opponent keeps making counters to turma? cherios take very long to make and are only good en masse, katepeltes are out of the question unless fighting cavalry, and murmillios are less than equal to toxotes. Was his main mistake just to not make enough murmillios or meat shields? Is the key to using turma effectively micro? In other games I have been completely decimated by turma but it appeared that the opponent was very carefully micromanaging his ranks.
