Welcome back

Arkantos must evacuate the citizens of Atlantis before they fall before Gargarensis’ army.

Starting objective: Land your troops on Atlantis’ shores. Begin construction of a base by claiming a settlement. (2)

Difficulty levels:

  • Easy:
    • Gargarensis has less defenses
    • Gargarensis has less starting units
    • Start with many more upgrades
  • Hard:
    • Gargarensis has more defenses, including more upgrades
    • Gargarensis has more starting units, including Petrobolii along the beaches and canals
  • Titan:
    • Gargarensis has more upgrades

This mission starts in the west of the map. (1) Under your command are a small fleet and transports carrying a significant army of MU’s, plus three Pegasi for scouting purposes.

There are four settlements to choose from. The two closer ones, (2b) are defended by Gargarensis’ fortresses, and will be struck at by his forces often. Gargarensis will also target these with god powers. In the north of the map is another free settlement that is only lightly defended, (2c) but is also vulnerable to the same attacks. In the south of the map is settlement on an isolated peninsula (2a) which isn’t even accessible by Gargarensis’ forces and hence won’t be attacked, but doesn’t have many resources.

Once you have chosen a settlement and built a Town Center, you’ll receive your main objective.

New objective: Rescue at least 15 Atlantean prisoners (3) and get them to the island to the west. (5)

If you don’t mind being a bit cheesy, then this scenario is very easy to beat. Go for the south settlement. (2a) You won’t have to even worry about Gargarensis forces until it comes time to attack, whereas the other settlements mean – on harder difficulties, anyway – that you will be subject to some challenging attacks.

There isn’t much wood or gold to be found on the peninsula where you are, but it’s enough to get to the Mythic Age. Advance under Hephaestus and invoke the Plenty power, which will grant you a solid if not rapid source of income. (Try sending villagers on transports to the clear beach to the southeast to build the necessary houses, Armory, Market etc – there’s not much space.)

Use fishing as your food source, it’s plentiful on this map. Remember to get both the upgrades – they have a much greater effect than other econ techs. You may also find it easier if you use food heavy units – Athena’s Minotaur and Dionysus’ Hydra are both good units.

Scout out the map in order to plot where to strike in order to liberate prisoners. Due to the number of defensive structures and archers wandering around the city, you’re going to need to train quite a few Pegasi in order to do this.

Prisoners can be found in six locations in the city, (3) though you should only need to strike three or four locations in order to get the 15 necessary to fulfil the objective. Rather than fighting up through the beach near the start of the mission, the two canals (4) provide a quick bypass to most of Gargarensis’ forces and defenses. You can also choose Apollo in the Heroic age and use his Underworld Passage god power to provide quick access to the city. Given that you are not facing the AI’s continued attacks as you would if you had chosen one of the other settlements, your starting army should be nearly sufficient for purposes of liberating prisoners. So when you are satisfied with your strength, trasport your units into the city and take the quickest route to liberate the necessary 15 prisoners. Once you have enough, put them on a transport and send it out to the island (5) in order to be rewarded with victory.
