I think the key may be that the AI was doing its age upgrade in a partially built TC. How on earth it managed to do this, I don't know. I haven't found any way to do this as a human player. If that's the case then this was just a freakish accident.
Otherwise, perhaps someone should investigate if it's possible to do something similar with an ally. Get an ally to start researching the age upgrade, somehow get his TC destroyed while it continues the research (this would be the tricky part), then build over it yourself.

He didn't spend any resources researching Mythic age. He didn't have market, the age upgrade was researched auto.

I'm thinking that this bug can only be done in singleplayer, by the AI. maybe the game thought that the settlement was built, and thus the AI was allowed to research the last age upgrade. or maybe the AI can do that anytime when it has a half-built settlement. for us, when we click on a half-built settlement, we can't do a thing with it. maybe teh AI acts as if its already built once it is being built, so it researched the last age upgrade with the settlement. but since it was still a settlement, the age upgrade didn't stop researching once the settlement changed hands.
