What's the difference:
3Ds works on a frame by frame basis. Basically every 10th or so frame from every animation in captured by 'posing' the model in that position. The computer then connects the dots and moves the model to match the points. The animation is not as fluent, and every animation requires a new model. So everytime a unit on the map does something different, a new model replaces the old one. Meaning every unit in the game is not a single, multi-animated model, but serveral mono-animated models.
Where as granny's are true '3d' in the fact that there is only one model that is manipulated to do different animations. Not only that, but it is not frame by frame, making the animations smooth. It also boast intelligent meshes, allowing the unit to transfer between animations smoothly, without just jumping to the starting point of it's next animation.
All the Titans, Anubite and Jormund Elver uses granny, which means they only have one model. As well as that, for example, if a Titan is attacking and is commanded to walk, instead of him jumping straight into his walk animation, his frame will intelligently be manipulated to move all is body parts into place of the starting point of his walk animation and only then it begins. Where as the other just swap animations instantly.
Why did ES not choose to do all granny animations? It means less models and smoother animations? It seems very backward doing it the other way, as well as a lower quality game!Just curious! Thanks!
