I recently rediscovered this game. I've been playing it since it came out on and off, lurking here under a different guise to keep up to date, but stopped roughly two-three years ago. I noticed ESO is dead; I'm assuming people are using voobly or w.e. How active is the community? Is multiplayer just supremacy and and only singleplayer oriented scenarios are being released?

Voobly is the place to go, as gameranger doesn`t have a rating system, or moderation. The peak is around 370 players online at one time.
If the gameranger community wasn`t stubborn, there could be over 600 online at one time, but it seems people don`t like rated games these days?

Why the hell would anyone want moderation? If you don't like what someone is saying just ignore them. This is why everything, including the internet, is on its way into becoming a police state. Control everyone! Also voobly's rating system means nothing. You can easily hack on there. In the miniscule chance you get caught by their "anti-cheat" system (haha) just create a new account.
Gameranger is better; it has more people and you can't get banned as far as I know. Also GameRanger doesn't charge you $$$ for putting more than 20 people on your ignore list, voobly does. Gameranger typically has about 200 more people online than voobly at any time.

Well at least someone is happy to see me. I'm afraid caps offend the peons of the internet, even if they are the proper manner to write in.

So do people only play the supremacy-esque games now? Not escapes, pit of doom, or any of those goofy scenarios?

I was never a big fan of just supremacy, I miss all the great scenario games. (Escape, get a job, sims, WRP, art contest, mythodea, RPGs, etc) Is there anywhere that still play those?

What do you mean there won't be chat channels? How are people supposed to interact, converse with random others about which game they want to play, make in-game friends?

I saw a post where Ryz0n said global chat is being tested and still experimental, let's just hope it gets pulled through. I can't imagine AOM without chat.
