I got the original AoE, about 3 weeks after it came out, because I thought the box looked cool. I judged the book by the cover, and the cover was right! I loved the game, and I just got into buying every game up to now.
Here's the AoE Series from greatest to least with all of them having a good level of...goodness :
1. Age of Kings 2. The Conquerors Expansion 3. Age of Empires 4. Rise of Rome 5. Age of Mythology

I was in South Africa (I don't remember why I was there) and went in a comp games shop to buy a game. I had heard about warcraft and went in and asked for it. The shop assistent recomended me starcraft and I was about to buy it... but the ugly alien on the cover wasn't convincing .
I hesitated and just as I was about to buy it. Suddenly a ray of light from the sky appeared and went through the ceiling and landed on.. AGE OF EMPIRES. I approached it slowly as an angelical voice sang....LOL wotever I just wanna say I chose AOE instead of Starcraft and that lead me to buying the rest of the AGE series. I wonder what would've happened if I chose Starcraft...
1 AOM 2 TC 3 AOK 4 AOE 5 ROR -> I hardly played it

Similar thing happened to me. I went into the Virgin Megastore in Kingston and went up to the games section. I was always interested in large armies and war etc... so i went over and look at some strategy games. I saw 2 games which caught my eye side by side. The first one i picked up was a Ceaser game (3 i think). I looked at the back of the box and i saw some fighting, and i was impressed by the fact that men were garrisoned on the wall. I then picked up the game beside that - AoE. I looked on the back and i saw some amazing screenshots. One was of the editor, the other was a massive battle taking place over a river, and there was a plainstakingly designed city. So i just had to buy AoE, and obviously RoR was next on my list.
Later on, i was in a Gateway store, and i saw the AoK demo, i was now awaiting AoK to come out and got it for x-mas and then Conquerors the day it came out. Whenever i got a new game i always stopped playing it after a while and went back to AoK:TC.
When they released the first screenshots of AoM on ES, i went round the Zone going "hey go to ensemblestudios.com!! They are releasing a new game with mythological units!!!"
Now i am blissfully playing AoM, but the notion of an x-pack isn't bothering me at the moment, i'm too hooked to think about it.

For me what happened was i was over at my friends house playing video games and his brother was playing the AOK on his computer ( he was cheating but i did not know that then ), so I asked him what game he was playing and he says "Age Of Empires II". To me it had looked pretty fun because he had 7 castles surrounding a wonder and there was a massive battle of what i would find out later were Samurai's, Mangudai's, Huskarls, Chanpions, Palidins, Skirmishers, And Arbs. I thought it looked pretty cool, and so i remmebered my 11th birthday was comin up so i asked for it and got it. Then for my next b-day i asked for the conquerors. Then one boring summer day last year I was watching one of my favorite shows "Extended Play", a show about video games, and on this show i saw a preview, or was it a review, of AOM. The Host Adam Sessler was talking enthusiastically about how Ensemble Studios was doing it again. I was litterally glued to the TV screen as i watched a short clip of him bolting a villager, and then another one of him meteoring a dock and some fishing ships. After that description of the game, i knew i had to get it. For the time from Summer to Christmas all i could talk about on the zone were Earth and Beyond and AOM. I forgot to ask for it for my 13th b-day so i ended up getting it for christmas.

Actually I first discovered Age of Empires in a Staples store in Palisades Mall back in 1998. I was like, "this has to be a good game". Then I noticed the characers in the front of the box, a Babylonian Scribe, a Greek Hoplite and an Egyptian Pharoah.... and I saw the designs on the box and looked at the back.
I thhought that if there was 12 civilizations, but no Asian civ, that I wouldn't buy this game. Then I noticed the pagoda drawing above the Pyramids.... So I just bought it.
My first game was with 1v1 on Easy. Shang vs Egypt. Needless to say I got smacked, I had nooo clue about it at all. I just made like 7 vills, 2 fishing boats (which mysteriously disappeared after I heard a horn sound and then the sound of something wooden collapsing) and 4 Clubmen. I had no clue about age advancement.
My clubmen got killed by 2 chariot archers or got converted. Out of clubmen, I thought I'd use vills against them. After having only buildings left, I just quit.

I saw the pretty AoE box in a store. By chance I noticed a friend had it, so I played it there for a while. Eventually (after downloading a few corrupt and bogus demos) I downloaded a working demo on the net (these were the days before I knew official sites existed hehe). Got the game shortly after.
I've folowed AoK, AoC and AoM on the net and bought them all on release day. (wow go me! </sarcasm> )
1. AoK with Conquerors 2. AoM 3. AoE with RoR 4. AoK 5. AoE=
