Playability: 3
The first thing I would like to mention is that this is NOT a campaign; it is a single player scenario and belongs in that section of this site. Now that that is out of the way, I gave this file a 3 in playability because of several factors. It plays fine, the triggers execute as they should, and it flows fairly smoothly. My only complaint is that I couldn't finish the scenario. I was unable to partially because of choices I made while playing it, but it would have been very difficult in any case at the end. I will give the author the benefit of the doubt and assume it is possible to win.
Balance: 3
For the majority of the scenario you only control 2-4 units and wander around the map only fighting a handful of enemies at a time. Towards the end you are given control of a small Atlantean town that is constantly under siege and a large army of assorted units. The enemy assaulting you is mainly comprised of myth units, so the town's army died very quickly when I played, since the heroes were off on a quest at the time. If I were to play again I would play my cards differently, but the objectives are VERY vague and didn't provide a lot of help during the game. I was unable to beat the scenario, if/when I play it again my opinions change, I will revise this rating.
Creativity: 3
This is a generally well made file; I can see that the author spent a good deal of time making it. However, it’s not really groundbreaking; it’s just like a lot of other scenarios I've played. There are some cinematics, but once again nothing new. The author renamed his characters in game (and also beefed up some of their stats), but forgot to name the players, which I find to be incredibly annoying. I can never understand how people can spend so much time on a scenario but not even take 4 seconds to name you something besides 'Player 1.' If I see the armies of the notorious Player 2 coming to get me, there's just something about that name that fails to bring terror to my soul. Scenario design is all about the little details.
Map Design: 3
Some parts of the map where designed beautifully, and others very blandly. For instance, the Tamarisk Tree/Tartarian Gate at the beginning was very original and neat looking, and I also enjoyed the pool (and the pool's effect) at the witch's dwelling. However, the majority of the map is just a path with some trees along the sides, and the terrain itself is very jagged and hard on the eyes. I feel the author should have smoothed it down somewhat, in particular by the oracle's home.
Story/Instructions: 2
You don't get an objectives banner until about halfway through the scenario, and shortly thereafter it ceases to update. I was confused about what to do and had to restart several times. The dialogue is poorly written and oftentimes makes no sense whatsoever. The spelling and grammar was very poor, thus I had difficulty understanding what was being said. The storyline is vague at best. And while all that doesn't detract from the game play itself, it definitely detracts from the atmosphere of the game. It is difficult to become immersed in a scenario that you have to restart several times after dying because you didn't know what to do. I really wish the author had spent more time planning the dialogue and objectives; I would have enjoyed his scenario so much more if he had.
Additional Comments:
A couple additional points - God Powers are invoked for you, which I know many people see as a big no no in scenario design. The fact that Arunt had a pet Hydra named Luscious made me grin, and the author made good use of the new AOMX units and effects. Although I have my complaints about this scenario, it is one of the better ones I've played recently. If the author releases a patched version and fixes a lot of the problems I touched on, I'll definitely try it out again. |

Hi Cowwarrior, thanks for taking the time to review my scenario. The reason this isn’t on the scn. Page is I goofed. I was trying to update a cpn. and created a new post. Not wanting a double post of the same game I uploaded the e.o.t. scn. I built this scenarios for my self and never really intended to circulate it. But now that it’s out I will stop what I’m working on and make the changes. If I knew Spineman’s e-mail (my link isn’t working) I might be able to get him to move this post to it’s proper local. Enough of that.
About the balance I’m going to add save points that will notify the player when to save the game and to make choices more apparent. The twist and turns should be the fun part of the game. I didn’t add any skill level. And I know it does go from being farley easy to very difficult. The heroes must leave the town and go on a quest when there are badly needed at home. There are three huge attacks that if the hero’s don’t get on their way will come and be devastating. Even once the heroes finish this quest the town has been attacked and raised to its town center. Powered up the hero’s return to kick but and save the town. Well, this is the way I wanted it to go.
I’m not sure why the objective didn’t update that surprises me, I’ll look in to it. The dialog isn’t a strong point and my spelling atrocious. I know. I haven’t had much luck finding people to edit before release, so I’m left to my own devices. I will make corrections and repost in a week or so. Thanks again for your consideration. sziggi

I really do wish I could have given the scenario a higher rating, as it is definately one of the better ones I've played. My advice to you is to just simplify the plot, slow it down a little, and try to explain the backstory a little more. Who is attacking our hero's town? Why? Questions such as that arose in my mind as I was playing. Including a readme explaining all of that would be a great way if you don't feel like putting all the extra triggers and such in your file.
Try to refine the dialouge a bit, I had some difficulty understanding a lot of it. I find it much easier to read text in the blue box rather than the chat dialouge. And please, PLEASE name your players, half of the time I didn't know who was talking when I played your file. The gameplay itself was all fine up to the part where you have to defend the town without any heroes. (I also was REALLY confused at the part where I selected the relic and placed it on the blue squares, please explain that a tad more if you rerelease this. Why where two titans fighting?) As far as the objectives banner goes, I really don't know why it bugged like it did. I can clearly see that you wrote objectives for the scenario, because when the banner finally does appear it marks the previous ones completed. The banner first appeared when I met Arunt and then stopped updating when the first underworld passage appeared.
By the time my heroes got back to the town, it was basically all demolished and the army was entirely gone. I stood no chance of seiging the enemy with just my heroes, I would have needed a full army to do so. The two Impulse god powers didn't help a whole lot either. I suggust just cutting back on the attacker's armies and/or delaying their attacks long enough to allow me to build up properly to fight them.
This scenario shows a lot of promise, I urge you to patch it up and rerelease it if you have the time to do so. I hope my suggestions have been some help to you, if you have any questions or want some design advice feel free to email me (thecowwarrior@yahoo.com) and I'll try to help you out. I've made scenarios myself (I'm currently working on a big project) and I've got some skill with the editor, so know that I'm willing to help. Keep up the good work sziggi! |

I finally got around to playing the updated version of this file.. I'm happy to say that it is quite a bit better in a lot of ways. The players have names, the objectives banner works (and your goals are CONSIDERABLY clearer), and it looks like the terrain was refined just a tad.
Sadly, I still have absolutely no idea what the characters are talking about most of the time, especially during the 'side quest,' but oh well. The two 'puzzles' within the scenario are a different touch, although I failed to grasp what the point of either of them was.
There were still a lot of 'why?' questions involving the plot and character motives that pop into my head as I played, but I won't get into that. My one true complaint is that I still couldn't beat the scenario! I tried at least half a dozen times to win the final battle, but I just couldn't do it. There were some STRANGE bugs.. the only army unit it would let me build was Katapletes (the other units aren't forbidden, they simply would not build when I clicked on them at the barracks, very odd), and it would only let me advance to the 2nd age (the button to advance to age 3 was visible at the TC, but clicking on it did nothing..). Why wasn't I allowed to build additional barracks, towers, and walls? I could not, no matter how hard I tried, siege an enemy town that was constantly pouring out huge armies when I had only a handful of heroes at my command and no siege weapons (or ability to build any, or any useful army units for that matter). I ask the author of the file, did you playtest this? Are you certain it is POSSIBLE to win?
The updated file is superior to the original. It still has its problems, but most are minor and can be overlooked, except for the fact that it is impossible (or damn near impossible) to win! This really could be a great file, it has all the elements of one - a good story (I think, it definitely needs refined), ECONOMY (most designers tend to forget that aspect of this game, AOM is a RTS game you know), original units, creativity, and most importantly, it is actually fun to play. It's really a shame that it's so difficult at the end. Nevertheless, I encourage anyone that reads this to play this file, perhaps someone can find a way to beat it, and have some fun playing no matter what.
I'd like to give credit to sziggi for showing a little humility and knowing how to accept constructive criticism. It is a trait that more people around here should pick up, its how we learn, improve ourselves, and grow. |

Hi TheCowWarrior Thanks for giving the scenario another try. I'm sorry it's not better, its just it would be easyer to build a new scn. than rebuild this one. The prob with the buttons not working is a bug. I run into many this one is the worst. You got to be a little bit twisted to put up with it, but what it is,is this. When the curser is over a button a little message in the lower left hand screen dicribes what it is. If you feel around the button with the curser and look for this message to pop up the button will be active and work, click it quick.
The story dosent realy have much to it. The towns being attacked by monsters and the heros have to go on a side quest to gain the eye. This eye is supposed to come from a titian if you pick the wining titain. At this point your supposed to go home with your new weapon and beefed up heros and kick but.
One trick to it is not letting to many enemy units bunch up and get stuck in there home bace. I know no remedy for this prob.. There's a trig that will cap thier numbers but it still alot. Yet if the buttons arnt working this will be the least of the scenarios problems.
One of the things I did like about this scenario is that it didnt take its self to seriously, I think it made a good creative back drop. Anyways, I hope this helps, it is winable. The condition is to dispatch the Herupexen (garg), then the game ends. Thanks for responding.

Bez I was at a site where this scenario got a verygood review, you have failed to see what was offered here. A random map gets a score of 3 and it offers much more than that. There is eye candy its just not over the top. Good directions are worth at least a 3 and I did that plus added and entertaining story, you came up short not me.I didnot complain about cowwarriors critique because he had alot to add and said he would consider changing the review, which he never he had not done. Ben you review is lame and total copy of the above score why bother, any way I'm going to have you removed. check the review guide.[Edited on 10/07/04 @ 08:23 AM]

Hey. I'm a new guy. I thought the campaign itself was alright. In the begining you put the wrong dialouge with the wrong names. The camera angles on the cinimatics were a bit disapointing, but overall were ok. The ending was the biggest dissapointment in my case. I mean you had a preety good story and then it just fell flat on it's face. You go through all that just to get an implode!! And you still have to build an army up. So overall I would give it a 3.4. Good game but you just have to figure out those bugs and that ending.
I would like just to announce that I am making my first campaign which will be called "Just the Begining" This campaign takes place right after the Fall of the Trident. The stroy mostly follows Ajax and how the Earth is threatened once again.
This will be hopefully realeased by August, 2005.
So keep your eyes peeled for "Just the Begining" |

it's now october 2005,nothing sawn yet.
further it's a bit of a wrong place to publicise your "upcoming" campaign.
try the forums, they are made for it.
Sziggi:
I'm going to try this, only to see if this really's worth a 2.8.
